MaeBeSew has a new fundraising family! **Meet the Mercer Family** They travel in a just a few short weeks, so let's help bridge the financial gap! Brian and Kassie have two beautiful children and sweet little Suzie Mei will make the perfect third! I love how these two stayed true to their desire to adopt. Kassie was kind enough to share their hearts in adoption...
"Brian & I have always been interested in adoption. When we first married, we discussed it and both agreed that one day, our family would grow through adoption.
I specifically always had a heart for international adoption and was drawn to China. Over the years we met many friends with similar hearts and have witnessed their adoption journeys and learned from them. Through those, we started to consider an older child adoption and eventually our hearts were opened to special needs- something that was not even on my radar previously.
After our children were born, we decided to delay our adoption until they were old enough to really be involved and help out. Our daughter Addie just turned 11 and our son Mason is 8 and we started this process one year ago in January 2017.
We were matched with our Suzie on October 20, 2017 and after seeing her picture, our hearts melted. Her diagnosis is scary. She has Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka Brittle Bone Disease) and it is a lifelong condition that makes her bones fragile and break easily. When I heard that she is wheelchair bound, I was fearful and saddened. Our house has a lot of stairs. "We can't move, we can't do this," kept going through my mind. I researched a lot and reached out to a high school friend that has the condition. As with most things, the more you know, the less scary it becomes. So we stepped out in faith and said yes and we couldn't be more excited to meet our little girl! There are a lot of unknowns but we'll just take those as they come.
When we started the process we weren't sure that it was the right time. We were (and are) very comfortable in this season of life. Our kids are at easy ages and our day to day life is running smoothly. We weren't sure if we really wanted to "rock the boat" and make life complicated. I prayed that God would make the adoption process go smoothly because I knew that we would both back down if it got too hard. And it did! We had notarized papers that had mismatched dates and even a misspelled notary's name that the Chinese Embassy overlooked and authenticated anyway. We had a class that needed to be taken or it could have delayed our travel, open up 2 extra spots for us to go with just 2 days notice. Almost every document from China came earlier than expected and I didn't have to call or email to track down anything! It has been an amazing process and we can't wait to start the next step!"
One of my favorite parts of their story is how they didn't let fear dictate their decision and they empowered themselves with knowledge. Our family can personally relate. We are excited to rally behind them and hope others follow! Their fundraiser is February 5th- February 11th. Every purchase for the "Mercer Family" will count towards their fundraising total. They receive 20% back of all purchases on maebesew.com/shop
Here is a direct link to their tax deductible account for those that would like to help them reach their goal. They have just a little more than $4,000 to go. Let's do this!
